Gypsy & the Cat
The sounds of GYPSY AND THE CAT cruised into our consciousness last year in the sails of a beautiful yacht with their sophisticated brand of synth and falsetto laden alternate pop music.
It all started with the music. The duo of LIONEL TOWERS (25 years) and XAVIER BACASH (22 years) wrote and recorded and produced their debut album entirely on their own in a small room above a garage workshop in South Melbourne with borrowed gear, acquired technology skills and an incredible ability to write songs.
From there a demo version of ‘JONA VARK’ was picked up by national radio broadcaster Triple J in their home country of Australia. It was later released in France on the prestigious Kitsune Maison compilation and featured on the Neon Gold blog who wrote “This band is like a pot of synth gold at the end of the pop rainbow. GYPSY AND THE CAT are creating some of the best new soft-pop sounds around. Within the first few seconds of ‘JONA VARK’ I pretty much had a flashforward to singing this chorus at a bus stop in five years time, because This. Song. Sticks!”
By then GYPSY AND THE CAT had then relocated to London and released their first single ‘TIME TO WANDER’ through the hipster Young and Lost 7” Singles club. Shortly after they signed directly to Sony RCA in the UK and began mixing their debut album. For that, GYPSY AND THE CAT enlisted David Fridmann (of Mercury Rev fame and producer of MGMT, Flaming Lips, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah to name a few) and Rich Costey (producer of amongst others, Muse, Mew, Franz Ferdinand, Glasvegas).
Influenced by a mixture of musical legends ranging from Fleetwood Mac to Jeff Buckley and modern DJs from Justice to Daft Punk, Gypsy & The Cat’s GILGAMESH is the perfect summer soundtrack.
NME has tipped the band as one of the 20 most likely artist in the world to break through in 2011. Australia has led the way where ‘GILGAMESH’ has been released and to date has peak at #2 on the national itunes album chart. They where the only band who played mainstage at the two biggest travelling summer music festivals BIG DAY OUT and FUTURE MUSIC FESTIVAL to rave reviews and massive audiences. All three singles scored a berth on Triple J’s ‘HOTTEST 100’ poll, the most for any artist in 2011 on what is the worlds largest annual music poll.
In Australia the critics have drawn many favourable notices to other Australian success “Gypsy and the Cat are like the love child of Empire of the Sun and Savage Garden” 4 star Who Weekly and “After just a few listens to this masterpiece, it is clear than “GILGAMESH’ will follow the Temper Trap and Empire of the Sun to beam around the globe” 4 star, News Limited.
Internationally, Gypsy and the Cat are now scheduled to release ‘GILGAMESH’ in Germany, Japan, Korea, Scandinavia, France, Belgium and Holland this year. They about to play Summer Sonic Festival in Japan and Bestival in the UK. ‘Jona Vark’ has just picked up massive radio adds in Germany including SWR3, WDR2, 1Live, Bayem 3, N-Joy, and NDR2. GYPSY AND THE CAT are in Europe on a promotional trip in July and then touring Europe extensively from September.
